Farewell to a Friend

In Memory of Rick Sall

In loving memory of a dear friend and mentor. It breaks my heart to announce that Rick Sall, Broker and the Proprietor of Needles Real Estate passed away on 1/1/2024.

I began my real estate career with Rick in 1991. I was employed as his office manager and my interest and passion for the industry grew from there. In those early days Rick was a kind, yet tough-love boss I will say! He worked hard and expected the same. He supported and encouraged me to obtain my Broker Associate degree in 1993, which I did. I worked side by side with him, learned so much, always supportive and kind.

Rick had been on the mountain since the mid 1970’s. He adored all creatures; animals, from land to sea, especially his beloved Yellow Lab, Madison – and his untiring dedication to rescuing turtles in Florida. He had a passion for sailing.
For most of his adult life, his home and dedication was to this great north county.

He supported local businesses and charitable organizations. We would make Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas meals at his house and deliver to the employees that had to work on those holidays from Cascade Village and Silverpick to Purgatory and Needles Townhomes. He started the first (and only) North County Christmas decorating contest for all neighbors to participate. We lit up that little square like the North Pole, complete with Santa and his 8 tiny reindeer adorning our starry sky as they “flew” between the real estate office and gas station. And who could forget “LEON” who rested along the entire length of our building during the holidays. He was active with the Snowdown winter festival and always brought the party to Purgatory, spreading good cheer and humor.

He was like a big brother to me, encouraged me to dream big and be confident – he was so generous with his time and advice. This quote comes to mind when I think of Rick, from one of his favorite musicians, Jimmy Buffett: “Take it all in… it’s as big as it seems. Count all your blessings. Remember your dreams.”

One of Rick’s many accomplishments was starting an independent, successful real estate company, Needles Real Estate, and building the office still located in Needles Square. It continued to be an icon of the north county long after his retirement. It is unfortunate that I announce the office will be closing, while unrelated, maybe the timing was just meant to be – an end of a legacy, and the man who had the vision behind it.

I will be relocating (in town and home office on the mountain) at the end of January 2024, still working full-time as your “Purgatory Area real estate expert”.

In closing, as I say farewell to my friend Rick, and the building he built where it all started, I'm proud to carry on a tradition of commitment and excellence in brokering real estate transactions and dedication to this great north county and resort community lifestyle and history.

“I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”
